About the founder

Jerald is owner and Publisher of Council Communications and current graphics editor of Gannett News Service, directing and providing informational graphics for more than 90 daily newspapers. Gannett is the largest newspaper company in the United States with a combined daily paid circulation of 10 million, including USA TODAY, the nation's largest-selling daily newspaper.

Before joining Gannett, Council was graphics editor of the Los Angeles Times. While at the Times, he redesigned the graphics stylebook and restructured the 29-member graphics department to meet the changing needs of the industry. Under his guidance, the Times won two national awards for its 9/11 graphics coverage. He edited and directed graphics accompanying two 2003 Pulitzer Prize winning stories.

Council was graphics director at The Baltimore Sun from 1996 to 2001. He was graphics editor at The Sun from 1994 to ‘96 and in 1998 was named chairman of the Times Mirror newspaper graphics group. Under his guidance, The Sun won numerous local and international graphics awards, including several Awards of Excellence from the Society for News Design, which recognized the paper as The World's Best Designed Newspaper in 1998.

From 1990 to 1994, Council served as art director of the Army Times Publishing Co. Prior to that he worked as a graphic artist for The Register Star in Rockford, Ill.

He has more than 20 years of visual communications and design experience including a master of arts degree in journalism and public affairs from American University and a bachelor of fine arts degree from Howard University in Washington D.C.
